Each organization has its own business model. They vary from industry to industry and geography to geography. Depending on the business model the strategies and the way businesses are done also changes. The way businesses come to the granular level of managing also changes depending on the business model and strategy. Normally from a sales or service perspective, this is where the organizations can use the Territories and its hierarchical structure to good use. Depending on where it is used it can either improve the sales potential and thus the revenues for the organization and strategize the way marketing campaigns can be run across in different places and the way customers would want them to be treated. In this short summary, we will try to figure out how the territories can be used in Dynamics 365.
Normally territory models can be created in different customer engagement apps like Sales, Customer Service, Marketing, Field Service, Project Service Automation, and so on. Further, the team members for that particular territory will be able to concentrate only on their core area and the leadership can monitor what is happening with each of the territories giving them an option to concentrate more on where it needs more attention thus keeping things pretty clear.
Once the territories are created, organizations can add team members to that territory thus letting them focus on that territory. Along with the members, we can also associate different other parameters which will be specific to the territory like financials, strategies, and so on. Depending on the nature/type and size of the territory we can also define different methodologies and thus equip the team members by providing them respective training and other capabilities. One thing to keep in mind is that territories always need not be a geographical location like a district, state, zone, country, or continent. It can be anything depending on the organization’s business model and how they visualize things. For example, it could be a target audience of customers based on their gender, age group, culture, and so on. The basic idea is that depending on the model of business followed by an organization they can group things together so that the team and the leadership can concentrate on how to look at that area on business and set specific targets to achieve and model the strategies to be considered when they approach that particular territory.
Dynamics 365 also provides territory hierarchical relationship by allowing to map a territory with a parent territory. If you notice, we cannot associate a user to multiple territories. Thus by creating territories and child territories allows the organization to model things in such a way that a user associated with a parent territory can overlook the child territories and their actions thus monitoring how things are progressing and giving a clear hierarchical/reporting model. Hope you got a feel of how to think about the territories in Dynamics 365. You have got two options when we have to create a territory depending on which app you are using.
